Money, while a necessary medium of exchange in our daily lives, is notoriously one of the leading causes of interpersonal friction. Whether you are dividing the cost of a rental villa with close friends, sharing monthly rent and utility invoices with apartment roommates, budgeting grocery tabs with a romantic partner, or calculating taxi runs on group vacations, managing shared finance balances has traditionally been a source of stress and awkward social interaction.
For years, the options available to individuals looking to manage these shared ledgers were highly polarized. On one hand, people relied on manual Excel sheets, notebooks, or chaotic group messaging threads. While private and free, these manual systems were highly prone to calculation errors, required continuous manual updates, and lacked real-time synchronization across devices.
On the other hand, commercial budgeting and expense-splitting mobile apps emerged to automate these calculations. However, as these platforms grew, they drifted from their utility foundations. They began blocking basic features behind expensive monthly subscription paywalls, restricting transaction entries, cluttering screen space with intrusive ads, and collecting extensive user data to sell to marketing networks.
We built FairShareUp to offer a better alternative. We believe that tracking group expenses should be simple, high-fidelity, completely transparent, and privacy-first. FairShareUp is 100% free, supported by minimal contextual ads, collects no telemetry tracking scripts, and features local browser-based voice input. We split bills, not friendships.
How We Started: The Founder’s Journey
FairShareUp was founded in 2026 by **Vansh Mehta**, a software engineer and finance researcher passionate about building clean, utility-driven software tools. The inspiration for the platform came from a common real-world problem: a complicated roommate co-living arrangement.
After graduating and moving into a shared flat in a busy city, Vansh found himself sharing rent, gas, electricity, and grocery bills with three roommates of different professions. Each month, the roommates spent hours compiling paper receipts, calculating individual shares based on bedroom dimensions, and sorting out complex bank transfers. When they tried using existing bill-splitting apps, they were frustrated by popups, daily transaction limits, and the apps tracking their personal purchases.
Realizing that millions of students, roommates, and travelers face the same daily friction, Vansh decided to build a clean solution. Leveraging a modern tech stack (Next.js for pre-rendered pages, Firebase for secure client-side Firestore database rules, and native Web Speech APIs for offline voice entry), he built the first prototype of FairShareUp.
Vansh designed the application with a focus on privacy. Instead of selling user transaction histories, the platform is funded through minimal, context-relevant advertising served via Google AdSense. We do not use behavioral tracking cookies, ensuring that your financial relationships remain private.

We achieve this by building elegant, automated expense-splitting tools that are accessible to everyone, completely free to use, and require no account gates or tracking scripts. We aim to protect user privacy, maintain clear communication, and keep group budgeting simple.

We envision a digital economy where users do not have to sacrifice their personal data or pay monthly subscriptions to access basic financial organization tools.
Why We Built a Privacy-First Splitter
In the modern software landscape, privacy is often treated as a luxury. Standard finance apps frequently monitor user spending habits, purchase categories, location checkins, and social networks to compile detailed profiles for advertising companies. We believe this practice is a violation of user trust.
Your transactional history is personal. Who you share meals with, where you travel, and how you manage household utilities is private information. That is why FairShareUp is built around privacy-by-default architecture:
- Zero Behavioral Tracking: We collect no analytics logs or telemetry trackers. Your data remains secure.
- Local Voice Transcription: Spoken expense dictations are parsed locally inside the browser engine, without sending audio files to remote servers.
- Secure Firebase Access Rules: Ledgers are protected by access rules, ensuring only invited participants can read or write transactions.
